Chapter 01

AP Yi is a current Classic mid-lane archetype

Riot explicitly names AP Master Yi mid as part of the League Classic experience. This is the current Classic interpretation: a 3.09-derived spell kit with the older random Double Strike, not modern Yi and not one frozen historical patch. AP concentrates power in Alpha Strike and Meditate; AD remains a different, broader auto-attack job.

  • Alpha Strike

    +100% AP magic damage

  • Meditate

    +200% AP total healing

Chapter 02

The 30-second setup

Take Flash and Ignite for the documented kill-lane setup. Start Doran's Ring plus two Health Potions, put the first six points Q, W, Q, E, Q, R, and finish Q > W > E with Highlander at levels 6, 11 and 16. The level-four E point helps last hits and a safe Spellblade follow-up without displacing the AP skills.

  • Doran's Ring + two Health Potions costs 470 gold; the former ring-only option left usable starting gold idle.
  • The baseline page is 9 Magic Penetration Marks, 9 Armor Seals, 9 flat AP Glyphs and 3 flat AP Quintessences.
  • Treat this as an AP-mid template, not evidence that AP is universally stronger than AD.
  1. Flash

    Exit or reposition

  2. Ignite

    Secure the first kill

  3. Q > W > E

    E at level 4

Chapter 03

Alpha Strike hits four different enemies once each

Alpha Strike deals 100/150/200/250/300 (+100% AP) magic damage to its primary target and up to three other nearby enemies. It does not repeat four hits into one isolated champion. Each selected minion or monster separately has a 50% chance to take the listed bonus damage, so waveclear and secondary champion contact are not automatic.

  • Current display values show 60–100 mana, 600 range and an 18/16/14/12/10-second cooldown.
  • This Classic spell does not inherit modern Yi's basic-attack cooldown reduction.
  • Choose the target and expected danger before casting; Alpha gives no steering input while Yi is untargetable.
  1. 01

    Thin the wave

    Reduce eligible bounce targets

  2. 02

    Choose the primary

    One hit per selected unit

  3. 03

    Respect the exit

    No mid-Alpha redirect

Chapter 04

Lane with indirect Alpha Strikes

The safer lane pattern is to trim the wave, cast Alpha on a minion while the opposing champion is inside the secondary-target pool, then walk out instead of forcing an auto. Fewer eligible units improve the chance that the champion is selected; they do not make every crowded bounce deterministic. A direct champion cast commits Yi beside danger and needs a clear punish plan.

  • Use Doran's Ring last hits to recover mana instead of spending Q on an empty trade.
  • If the opponent holds hard control for your landing or Meditate, preserve Health and the wave rather than donating a direct Q.
  • Push only when the next action is clear: safe recall, ward, roam or pressure on a known side lane.
  1. Last-hit

    Recover 4 mana

  2. Indirect Q

    Poke through the wave

  3. Spend the push

    Ward, recall or roam

Chapter 05

Meditate is a five-second channel, not instant safety

Meditate restores 200/350/500/650/800 Health plus 200% of AP across the full five-second channel, while granting 100/150/200/250/300 Armor and Magic Resist. The ratio is total healing, not per second, and Deathcap raises Yi's AP rather than changing that ratio. Hard control can interrupt the stationary channel, so wait for the relevant spell or channel from safety.

  • Rank one at level 2 turns Health into a lane resource; further ranks raise healing, resists and mana cost.
  • A short channel can bridge a dangerous cooldown, but it does not erase Ignite or Grievous Wounds.
  • Slow immunity from Highlander does not protect Meditate from stuns, silences, taunts or suppressions.
  • Safe channel

    Interrupt is down

  • Emergency bridge

    Stasis after enemy commit

Chapter 06

The baseline page gives +9 pen, +9 armor and +25.8 AP

Nine Magic Penetration Marks, nine Armor Seals, nine flat AP Glyphs and three flat AP Quintessences total +9 Magic Penetration, +9 Armor and +25.8 Ability Power. The legal 21/0/9 page adds AP, magic penetration, damage, mana tools and summoner cooldowns. It is a coherent lane page, not a measured best page.

  • Patch 26.16 fixed Spellsword so its 5% AP magic damage on the next basic attack now scales with AP.
  • Armor Seals are the documented default; change defenses only for a known lane problem rather than copying a role label.
  • CDR Glyphs trade immediate Q/W power for uptime and must be checked against Shushei, DFG and the 40% cap.
  • 9 Marks

    +9 Magic Penetration

  • 9 Seals

    +9 Armor

  • 9 Glyphs

    +10.8 AP

  • 3 Quints

    +15 AP

Chapter 07

Choose the first major item by the job

Current AP Yi specialists do not agree on one universal first core, so Riftback should not invent one. Deathcap maximizes Q and W scaling; Deathfire Grasp creates a four-second burst window; Lich Bane adds mana, movement speed and single-target follow-through; Shushei's Mana Jug supplies Magic Resist, regeneration and 20% CDR for an attrition lane.

  • Deathcap: take the raw AP route when wave damage and Meditate scaling are the main constraints.
  • DFG: take the pick route when its active can create the first kill threshold before Alpha.
  • Lich Bane: take the reachable-target route only when the next basic attack is safe.
  • Shushei: take the stability route when AP pressure, mana and spell uptime matter more than maximum immediate burst.
  • Deathcap

    Q/W scaling

  • Deathfire Grasp

    First-kill burst

  • Lich Bane

    Safe auto follow-up

  • Shushei's

    Mana, MR and CDR

Chapter 08

Use DFG, Lich Bane and Zhonya in the right order

Deathfire Grasp belongs before Alpha Strike: its active deals the opening magic damage and amplifies subsequent magic damage by 20% for four seconds. Alpha primes Lich Bane, but Lich damage arrives only on the next basic attack; Q itself does not consume that proc. Zhonya is the bridge after the opponent commits or Meditate is interrupted, not a button to spend before danger exists.

  • Pick sequence: DFG → Q → safe Lich auto → reassess the kill threshold.
  • The live Lich tooltip omits a trustworthy damage ratio, so no AP percentage is printed here.
  • Void Staff answers visible Magic Resist; Zhonya answers a punish window. They solve different problems.
  1. 1 · Amplify

    Active before magic damage

  2. 2 · Alpha

    Reach the target

  3. 3 · Basic attack

    Consume Spellblade

  4. 4 · Bridge

    Only after commit

Chapter 09

A kill resets; an assist only cuts base cooldowns in half

Highlander costs 100 mana and grants 40% Movement Speed, 40/60/80% Attack Speed and slow immunity for 8/10/12 seconds. While it is active, a champion kill refreshes all cooldowns. An assist instead subtracts half of each spell's base cooldown. Calling both outcomes a takedown reset hides the decision that determines whether another Alpha is actually ready.

  • Do not activate Highlander before a real entry or cleanup window; its duration is finite.
  • A kill can restart the chain immediately if mana and target access remain.
  • After an assist, bridge the remaining cooldown with distance, Meditate or Zhonya instead of assuming Q is ready.
  • Champion kill

    Full cooldown refresh

  • Assist

    Half base cooldown removed

Chapter 10

Enter the fight after the first control spell

AP Yi is a reset cleanup threat, not the team's first contact. Let a frontline or another threat draw the initial stun, silence, taunt or suppression; then identify the easiest safe kill rather than the most important full-Health target. DFG, Q, Ignite and a reachable Lich auto matter only if they cross that first kill threshold.

  • If the enemy still holds two independent suppressions or hard-control chains, one defensive answer is not enough.
  • Do not walk into melee range for Spellblade when Q damage and positioning already created a safer exit.
  • After each kill or assist, check the actual cooldowns and mana before choosing the next target.
  1. 01

    Wait

    First control is spent

  2. 02

    Cross threshold

    Create one safe kill

  3. 03

    Re-enter

    Only when reset is real

Chapter 11

Counter AP Yi by denying the first clean kill

Highlander's slow immunity does not stop hard control, Meditate can be interrupted, and direct Alpha casts create a punish window even though the exact fallback point still needs a live test. Spread away from a farm wave to reduce indirect Q access, hold control for Yi's channel or exit, add Magic Resist when Q is the damage problem, and protect the easiest reset target.

  • Stuns, silences, taunts and suppressions are different from slows; Highlander answers only the slow category.
  • Magic Resist and healthy frontline targets lower the chance that one Alpha becomes a kill chain.
  • Do not spend every interrupt before Meditate; forcing Yi to channel safely is part of his recovery plan.
  • Interrupt W

    Break the recovery window

  • Track MR

    Force the penetration buy

  • Deny the reset

    Protect the low target

Chapter 12

Patch 26.16 fixed E and Spellsword, not every old tooltip conflict

Patch 26.16 fixed Wuju Style's lower-than-intended cooldown and Spellsword's missing AP scaling. The intended E display is now 25/23/21/19/17 seconds with a 40-mana cost. Riot also halved the Classic AP contribution to turret damage from 40% to 20%, so old claims that AP Yi deletes structures through raw AP should not be copied unchanged.

  • Alpha's rank-five display says 10 seconds while a legacy field in the same current record says 11; plan around the tooltip's 10 until a live timing settles it.
  • The exact Alpha fallback point, Lich Bane damage ratio and Shushei takedown restoration amount remain unexposed by current static text.
  • Internal Double Strike text conflicts between 15% chance and every seventh attack; the structured value and main tooltip support 15%.
  • Wuju Style

    26.16 cooldown fix

  • Spellsword

    AP scaling fixed

  • Alpha Strike

    Landing test still open
